Coach Keel’s Background

yearbook02

Coach Matt Keel, the director of the Complete Camp Series and coach of the Choose Top Leg Camps, started wrestling at St. Cloud High School in Florida in 1990. Coach Lee Sill started developing the program there the same year. With his accomplished experience at Crestwood High School, Iowa (80-10-1 dual record in 20+ years) the St. Cloud program blossomed quickly. Coach Keel attributes a lot of his coaching style to the standards Coach Sill set.

Coach Keel had an impressive high school wrestling career posting a 28-3 senior record. He was unbeaten on his home mat throughout his career. He beat multiple state finalists during his junior and senior years and was St. Cloud’s first two-time region champion. His disappointing finish at the state tournament continues to motivate him as a coach. Coach Keel also played football, ran cross-country, and was a three-time letterman on the varsity weightlifting team.

Following his aviation dreams, Coach Keel was accepted into the US Air Force Academy and went with plans to compete in the wrestling program there. While becoming accustomed to the rigorous academic requirements he decided not to compete in order to focus on grades. As his focus on his future in the aviation industry matured, he decided to transfer from the Academy to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. While attending Riddle he met and married Virginia Lee Keel. He graduated with a BS in Managment of Technical Operations with an Aeronautical Science specialty in 2000.

Coach Keel was a varsity assistant coach for two seasons at Seabreeze High School while he attended Embry-Riddle. Upon graduation he spent 3 years in the aviation industry as a sales and research consultant. Following the events of 9/11 Coach Keel decided to begin his career in education and coaching. He was a varsity assistant coach in Virginia at Brentsville District High School and Fauquier High School for two years each before becoming the head varsity wrestling coach at the newly built Skyline High School in Front Royal, VA. In his six years as an assistant the teams he helped out won 5 district team titles and had 12 individual state placers including 3 finalists. In his first year at Skyline, he had 4 state qualifiers and 2 state placers. In his second year he put a wrestler in the state finals.

Coach Keel teaches Engineering and Technology Education at Skyline High School. He likes to spend his free time hanging with his wife Ginny or chasing his four boys (Talon, Maxim, Brody, and Zeke) around the house. Coach Keel accepted Jesus Christ as his savior during middle school and commits everything he does as a Husband, Father, Teacher, and Coach to the Lord.
